The Complete Move-Out Cleaning Checklist

A move-out clean is not a Tuesday tidy. Landlords and buyers look in the oven, the tracks, and the closet corners you have not seen since you moved in. Work room by room, top to bottom, and finish floors last so you are not walking dirt back in.

Use this as a printable-style list. Skip anything the lease says is not your job (exterior windows, garage oil stains, the yard). Add anything the property manager put in writing — that list wins over this one.

Before you start

• Confirm move-out date, walkthrough time, and who keeps the keys
• Take photos of existing damage so you are not billed for it
• Pack or stage so surfaces are empty — you cannot clean under a pile of boxes
• Gather trash bags, vacuum, mop, microfiber, bathroom cleaner, degreaser, glass cleaner
• Turn on lights and open blinds. Dirt hides in “enough daylight” rooms

Kitchen

This is where deposits are lost. Plan more time here than in the bedrooms.

• Empty fridge and freezer; wash interior shelves, drawers, and door seals; leave doors slightly open if unplugged
• Oven: remove racks, clean interior and glass, wipe the stovetop and drip pans
• Dishwasher: clear the filter, wipe the door gasket and detergent cup
• Microwave interior and the underside of the hood
• Cabinet interiors if they are empty (move-out usually expects this); wipe exteriors and handles
• Counters, backsplash, and sink (including the faucet base)
• Sweep and mop last, including the kickplate along the floor

Bathrooms

• Toilet: bowl, seat (both sides), hinges, base, and the floor around it
• Shower/tub: walls, door tracks, glass, grout, and the drain hair
• Vanity: sink, faucet, cabinet interior if empty, mirror
• Exhaust fan cover (dust it — people notice)
• Floors, including behind the toilet

Bedrooms and living areas

• Dust ceiling corners, vents, and reachable fan blades
• Wipe window sills, tracks, and interior glass you can reach safely
• Baseboards and door frames — a damp cloth, not a dry swipe
• Closets: shelves, rod, and the floor
• Light switches and outlet plates
• Vacuum carpets slowly; pull out whatever is left (dresser, bed frame)
• Mop hard floors after the vacuum, working toward the door

Laundry and utility

• Washer drum wipe-down; dryer lint trap and the floor behind if you can pull it out
• Utility sink and any open shelves
• Water heater closet or HVAC closet: vacuum the floor, do not stack products on equipment

Entry, halls, and extras

• Front door interior, handle, and the floor mat area
• Hallways and stairs (vacuum treads, wipe the rail)
• Patio door tracks if they are part of the unit
• Replace burned-out bulbs you are responsible for
• Take the last bag of trash with you — do not leave it “for the next person”

Final walk

Walk the unit the way a manager will: start at the back bedroom, end at the front door. Open every cabinet. Crouch once in each bathroom. If you still see a ring in the tub or a sticky oven door, that is the item they will photograph.
